Florida's Minimum Foundation Law, passed in 1947, included provisions for public support of junior colleges. Under the provisions of this law, a junior college district consisting of Jackson, Calhoun, and Washington Counties was approved to operate as a public institution with financial support from the three counties and the State of Florida. This approval was granted by the State Board of Education, and Chipola Junior College became a public institution effective September 1, 1948. more...

Florida Caverns State Park

Equal in beauty to such famous sites such as Mammoth Cave and Carlsbad Caverns, the caves at Florida Caverns State Park contain dazzling formations of stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, columns, rimstones, flowstones and draperies. These fragile formations are composed of calcite, a mineral dissolved from limestone rock when surface water containing carbonic acid percolates through the rock into the caves. As this mineral-charged water encounters the air inside the caves, layers of calcite are deposited. more...

It is part of an extensive system of caves and tunnels carved through the limestone. The springs form the headwaters of Merritt's Mill Pond, a narrow, seven mile long pool whose waters are gin clear.

The Russ House

The Russ House is noted as one of the finest examples of Colonial Revival architecture in Florida and is on the National Historic Register. The home is one of the last reminders of days past when Lafayette Street was lined with vast oaks, azaleas and stately, charactered family homes. more...
